Simon Rose, Neil Barrett and Paul Dodd completed their 103 mile Cotswold Way Challenge in 3 days – not the original planned 4 – but just 3 days!  Well done lads that was one big achievement and very impressive.  Almost as impressive as the whopping £1600+ that we have so far raised in sponsorship money for the Bristol Children’s Hospital and the total is still steadily rising.  So, we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our patients, friends and family who have sponsored Simon, Neil and Paul, for helping us to raise such a huge amount.  It will make a difference, thank you.

Back to work after the summer break?

Research from The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) in March 2011 found that 51% of the population were suffering from some form of back pain. As the nation goes back to work after the summer break, the steady increase in office/desk based working could be adding to the problem.

Previous research also found that a third of office workers make no adjustments to either seating or computer equipment when switching desks.

There were two other problem areas – sitting too long without a break and carrying heavy computer bags to work.

Tim Hutchful from British Chiropractic Association says: “Whether at work or at home, computers have begun to dominate our lives, yet what we don’t realise is that they in fact have the ability to damage our health. Back pain is becoming quite common and our working lives could be contributing to this. By taking time to adjust your chair and by taking regular breaks can help protect your spine and prevent the onslaught of back pain”.

To help protect your backs at work, the BCA offers some useful tips for us to keep in mind at the start of each working week:
– Make time to check your bag/briefcase each day for items you won’t need. Additional weight in your bag is extra weight that your shoulders and back have to bear.

– Use a rucksack design work bag/laptop case, carry it on both shoulders and adjust the straps so that the bag is held close to your back.

– Take the time to adjust your chair when you start working at a new location.

– Your seat should be adjusted so that your feet are flat on the ground, your hips slightly higher than your knees and your eyes level with the centre of the computer screen.

– Relax when sitting into your chair, making sure you have your bottom against the seat back and your shoulder blades are touching the back rest of the chair. Arms should be flat and your elbows level with the desk or table you are using. Use a seat with arm rests.

– Take regular breaks. Never sit at the computer for more than 40 minutes; less if possible. When you take a break, walk around and stretch a little.

It’s Blister Plasters at the Ready for Simon Rose!

Local Chiropractor Simon Rose will be walking the entire length of the Cotswold Way, that’s over 100 miles from Chipping Camden to Bath, in order to raise money for Bristol Children’s Hospital’s charity The Wallace and Gromit Appeal.

Bristol Children’s Hospital does an amazing job day after day of looking after very poorly children.  Simon’s son Edward was born with a serious congenital heart defect called Fallot’s Tetralogy in 2007 and he received his life saving open heart surgery at Bristol Children’s Hospital in 2008.

Simon says “It is very important to myself and our family to be able to give something back to the Bristol Children’s Hospital after they saved our sons’ life.  He may need further corrective surgery when he is older and so we will always support their charity as much as we possibly can.”  Simon would like to split the money he raises between the intensive care unit and the cardiology unit who are currently trying to raise £250000 for a new echocardiogram machine.

Sponsorship forms in the reception room of Simon’s clinic the Longlevens Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic have drawn great attention and Simon has been truly touched by the generosity and support shown by patients so far.  “Here at the clinic we feel part of what is a really wonderful community in Longlevens.  In light of recent events in Gloucester with the riots etc it is important to remember that Gloucester really is a fantastic city made up of wonderful people and I am being shown great support by members of this community for my fundraising efforts.”

This will be the second major fundraising event that Simon has organised and completed, the first having been the Three Peaks in 2009.  The Cotswold Way challenge starts on September 8th and Simon and three of his friends will complete it in four days.  You can sponsor Simon at www.justgiving.com/Leah-Rose

Mr G, Gloucester

“Tracey really listened to what my concerns/needs were, and then used her knowledge to explain how she would proceed, given all the information. Tracey makes you feel relaxed the moment you walk into the room. As she talks to you and prepares for your massage, you can tell she really has an interest in not only what’s going on with your body, but in whom you are. You find yourself feeling comfortably assured that you will be receiving a wonderful therapeutic experience.”She encourages me to be an active part in my own treatment by putting me to work with passive resistance stretches or offering me suggestions for moves I can do at home. She is open to ideas and interested to know what works for you. My weekly treatment has become a part of my life, some time for me, and my well being, its working!!…….. Thank you Tracey”
