Movement, strength and everyday function

We look at the tasks that trouble you, such as reaching overhead, putting on a coat or lying on the affected side. Tell us if stiffness is restricting movement or if weakness is making it difficult to lift. These details help guide examination and the decision about referral or further investigation.

For routine shoulder problems, gently keep the shoulder moving and avoid repeatedly provoking the pain. Do not start heavy or strenuous exercises without advice. Seek a GP assessment if symptoms worsen or do not begin improving after two weeks. The urgent symptoms below need earlier help.

Elbow discomfort may affect gripping, lifting, work or sport. Describe what brings it on, whether it followed an injury and how long it has been present. Your assessment helps us discuss suitable next steps rather than assuming every elbow problem is tennis elbow or a repetitive strain.

Where appropriate, care may include a graded exercise plan, advice about activity and hands-on treatment. We will review your response and recommend referral if needed.

Gripping, lifting and changes in workload

We ask about repeated tasks at work, racquet or throwing sports, and changes in your usual workload. Pain around the elbow can involve different structures, and symptoms travelling from elsewhere in the arm or neck also need consideration.

A practical plan may involve adjusting aggravating tasks and rebuilding tolerance to gripping or lifting. We agree a starting level and review how you respond. If pain persists for several weeks, seek GP advice; a swollen joint with fever or sudden severe symptoms needs urgent medical assessment.

Wrist and hand pain

Wrist or hand pain, stiffness and altered sensation can have different causes. We will ask about your symptoms, medical history and the tasks that are difficult, then assess whether routine muscle and joint care is suitable. Persistent or worsening symptoms may need GP or specialist advice.

If an injury has caused severe pain, a change in shape, numbness or marked difficulty moving the arm or hand, seek urgent medical assessment instead of waiting for a routine appointment.

Grip and altered sensation

Tell us whether pain followed a fall or twist, whether the wrist swells and whether fingers feel numb or tingly, especially at night. A change in grip or sensation may require a different assessment from simple activity-related soreness. We do not assume all wrist symptoms are carpal tunnel syndrome.

Reduce activities that aggravate mild symptoms while maintaining gentle movement. Seek GP advice for persistent tingling, recurring pain or symptoms that limit normal tasks. Assessment and when to seek help

Your chiropractor will explain their findings, discuss realistic goals and give you time to ask questions. Any proposed treatment will be agreed before it begins. We do not guarantee a cure or permanent prevention of pain.

Urgent symptoms

Call 999 for sudden arm pain with pressure, heaviness or squeezing across the chest. Use NHS 111 for urgent advice about sudden severe shoulder pain, an arm you cannot move, persistent pins and needles, a hot or cold limb, or feeling feverish and unwell.
