When to seek medical help
Call 999 or go to A&E
Get emergency help for a headache that starts suddenly and is extremely painful, or a headache with weakness, numbness, speech or balance problems, confusion, loss of vision, a seizure, recent head injury, or a very high temperature, a stiff neck or sensitivity to light. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
Get urgent advice
Contact NHS 111 or an urgent GP service for headaches with vomiting, eye or vision problems, pain triggered by coughing or exercise, jaw pain when eating, or a tender scalp. See your GP if headaches keep returning or worsen despite self-care. Read the NHS headache guidance for the full advice.
Assessment and next steps
Your chiropractor will discuss when your headaches occur, how they affect you and any associated neck symptoms. After an appropriate examination, we will explain the findings and options, including referral when needed. Any proposed care will be discussed before you decide how to proceed.
A suitable plan for an associated muscle or joint problem may include exercises, advice and hands-on care. We will review progress and avoid promising a cure or permanent prevention of headaches. Read about neck pain and what to expect from chiropractic care.
