Shoulder Pain

Shoulder dysfunction is a very common problem. If the arm and shoulder blade are not moving correctly then with repetitive motions over time, pain and discomfort can occur.

The shoulder can be prone to injuries as it is a very loose joint that is only connected to the spine by one small true joint (The Sterno-clavicular joint). The rest of the shoulder is held in position by muscles. This means that an imbalance in the muscles can lead to a variety of different types of injury.

Your neck can sometimes be a cause of shoulder dusfunction, and can actually be a key element in treating a shoulder injury as a lot of the muscles holding your shoulder in place originate at the neck.

A group of muscles commonly associated with the shoulder is the ‘rotator cuff’. These four muscles can be crucial in the rehabilitation of a shoulder injury. Our Chiropractors will explain the role of your different muscles in relation to the rest of the muscles and joints that make up the very complex, but brilliant, shoulder joint. They will explain what is causing your problem and how they will be able to help.

Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can arise for a variety of reasons, from traumatic events during sporting activity, to a fall, to overuse as in Tennis Elbow, Golfers elbow or Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI).

The Elbow enables you to bend your arm and twist your wrist. It’s a very clever joint that is constructed to allow both flexion, extension and rotation, as well as being able to transmit great forces into the upper extremity when fully straightened out and under force.

Common causes of Elbow Pain

Tennis elbow is considered one of the most common elbow conditions. It occurs as a result of repeated flexion and extension activities, most commonly associated, but not limited to, sports. Hence the name ‘Tennis Elbow’.

Golfer’s Elbow is also due to repeated flexion and extension. It affects the flexor compartment of muscles (muscle that flexes wrist), whereas Tennis elbow affects the extensor compartment (muscle that extends the wrist).

Both of these conditions result from small tears occurring where the muscles attach to the bone, leading to inflammation which becomes irritating and persistant. Both conditions occur in both sporting and non-sporting people!

Hand pain can occur for a variety of reasons, for example, sports (e.g sprains), overuse (e.g Muscle Strains), degenerative (Arthritis) and systemic s (e.g Raynaud’s Phenomenon) conditions.
