When to get urgent help
Get advice from NHS 111 now if the knee is very painful, you cannot move it or bear weight, it is badly swollen or has changed shape, or it locks, gives way or clicks painfully. A hot or red knee with fever or shivering also needs urgent advice. Do not wait for a routine clinic appointment. See the NHS knee pain guidance.
Assessment and suitable care
We will discuss the findings and your goals before proposing any treatment. Where appropriate, a plan may include exercises, advice about managing activity and hands-on care. Progress reviews help us decide whether to adapt the plan or recommend another approach. We do not guarantee pain relief or permanent prevention of recurrence.
