When knees go wrong…
Even though the knee is a relatively simple ‘hinge’ joint, it can get into trouble from time to time. It’s the largest joint in the body and it takes a tremendous strain of weight when we do simple things like walk or run. There are alot of very strong muscles that connect to the knee, plus also a lot of large ligaments and areas of cartilage. Damage to these strutures can be debilitating and stop you from enjoying life or sport… or both!
Knee pain may also be referred from another area or injury such as the lower back, your feet, or your hips
Knee pain from the Foot…?
Even though it sounds strange, some knee problems can be a result of poor support from below! Damage or aggravation from the ankle or foot can often make it hard for the knee to correctly absorb shock, resulting in the knee being overloaded and then injured. If the mechanics of your foot are causing your knee pain then we can offer you a foot consultation here at our Gloucester based clinic.
Getting the foot and ankle moving properly and ensring that they are well supported is often a great start towards beating those persistent niggles around the knee, for good. Prescribing a tailor made orthotic (shoe insert) can really help support the foot, and help the body to safely absorb shock without straining areas of the knee that can’t withstand it.
What to do if you have knee pain
If you do have knee pain then you might find wearing soft shoes helps ease the pain (running trainers are best, but no running!). Applying an ice pack to the tender area around the knee or thigh regularly (protect your skin with a damp tea towel) will help calm the inflammation (see “Why I need to Ice?“). Keeping mobile is important but only small stints around the house or garden to start. If pain persists, its best to seek help from our chiropractic team here at the clinic. By treating the problem quickly and efficiently, we can help to prevent the likelihood of the knee pain returning.
